Big Dig disaster

by Joe on July 12, 2006

In what is starting to look like one of the worst and most expensive construction and engineering disasters in modern times, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority is ordering a massive review of Boston’s metro highway system after finding over 60 places in the Big Dig tunnel signaling potential failure of bolts holding tons of concrete in place. This comes on the heel of yesterday’s disaster where slabs of concrete fell suddenly onto moving cars, crushing one and killing a woman instantly.

The massive project has been plagued by water leaks and the revelation that inferior quality concrete was used for large portions of the tunnel.

How such a lack of quality control could have been allowed to occur is beyond me. Officials have threatened charges of negligent homicide against the contractors responsible for the poor construction, and rightfully so. In the meantime, this disaster of a tunnel needs to be kept shut down until its safety can be guaranteed.
