Conservatives apoplectic over Mary Cheney pregnancy

by Joe on December 7, 2006

Upon hearing that lesbian Mary Cheney is pregnant and will be having a child with her female partner, conservatives are beside themselves with “concern” for this child. I can’t help but laugh at some of the things they’re saying.

Says Carrie Gordon Earrl from Focus on the Family:

Love can’t replace a mom or a dad. Over the last 30 years, thousands of studies confirm that children do best when they have a married mother and father. There is no reputable evidence to say children fair [sic] as well in same-sex homes. Children deserve the very best we can offer and gay adoption – by definition – intentionally denies children either a mother or a father.

Why don’t you try telling all the kids from single-parent homes who have grown up to be successful and happy adults that they shouldn’t be as well-adjusted as they are, Ms. Earrl? And if you’re so concerned about children having both a mother and a father, then why aren’t you on the front lines protesting the war in Iraq that is causing kids to grow up in single-parent homes because their dads and moms have been sent over there or even killed? You’re nothing but a hypocrite.

Next up is Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse of Concerned Women of America:

Mary Cheney will be unable to do anything about the gaping hole in her child’s family. In addition, her child will be vulnerable to a whole variety of negative outcomes — drug use, juvenile delinquency, school drop-out — not to mention the anger and other emotional problems that are typical of children whose fathers are absent while they are growing up.

“Mary Cheney is the face of the tragic and burgeoning trend of adult women who don’t want a father in the picture, but want to have a baby. Thirty-seven percent of America’s babies now are born to single mothers; the ramifications for all of us are disastrous. There will be a whole generation of little girls who will look for love in the wrong places and little boys will have no role model except the bad-boy celebrities on MTV.”

Yes, because juvenile delinquency, drug use and drop-outs are solely the province of single-parent or lesbian-parent kids. Give me a break. As for there being a whole generation of little girls looking for love in all the wrong places, maybe it’s because of people like you pushing unrealistic Prince Charming stories and teaching them they need to depend on being a man’s housewife and concubine in order to be happy.

From denying the realities of the war in Iraq, to denying the truth of global warming in the face of thousands of studies, to Mary Cheney’s baby–why are some conservatives just so stupid?!
