US speaking for Israel in latest massacre

by Joe on July 30, 2006

The State Department announced today that Israel would briefly suspend bombardment of southern Lebanon in the wake of an attack in Qana that killed over 50 people, mostly women and children. There was no announcement from Israel itself.

Could someone explain why the US State Department is speaking for Israel? Does Israel not have a foreign minister? I can’t understand why the US can’t attempt some semblance of neutrality. Instead it seems content to fan the flames of hatred in the Arab world and let them think that the US and Israel or synonymous–or worse yet, that the US speaks for and is accountable for Israel’s actions.

The US is and should be accountable for Israel’s actions. It basically gave its blessing for the continued pounding of Lebanon that has cost thousands of civilian lives.

And because of the US’s resistance to immediate ceasefire the conflict is getting harder and harder to resolve. They’re supplying the bombs to Isarel for god’s sake! Bush & company should stand in trial for war crimes.

Agreed…I just felt that this little announcement worsened an already very bad situation about the way America is perceived. But maybe it just can’t get any worse already.

Well, ya see, if the US speaks for Israel on this issue, then Israel can break the deal a couple of hours later and profess never to have said it in the first place….
